Steps to Cross Register

  1. Research courses of interest using the online catalogs and other resources. Be sure to review schedules, meeting times, enrollment limits, and exam dates. Be certain that the cross-registered course is not jointly offered with your home school, and does not cover subjects/courses available in your home school.

  2. Confirm eligibility.

  3. Fill out the Cross-Registration Petition form online(including your name, email address, telephone number, Harvard University ID number, and degree program designation). You will need one form for each school in which you plan to cross-register. Click on "Add a Course" button and browse the catalog for a course to add a course to the form. Multiple courses at the same school can be listed on one form.

  4. Print the completed Cross-Registration Petition form from this web site.

  5. Obtain the instuctor's signature for each course listed on the petition. The instructor's signature on the petition form indicates that the student has the instructor's permission to register for the course; it does not guarantee that there will be space for the student in the course.

  6. Submit the form (only one copy) to the host school's Registrar's Office. (Please consult the Campus Map for more information on location.) Be sure to keep a copy of the completed petition form for your own records. Check to see if there are any additional forms that need to be completed at the host school.

  7. Cross Registration at HBS-MBA Program Only:
    1. Pay Materials fee of $150 per 3 credit course/$75 per 1.5 credit course (MIT/Tufts students only; Harvard students will be term-billed).
    2. Complete Cross Registrant Data Sheet at Spangler Center 2nd Floor.
    3. Receive temporary password to access HBS Course Platform.
    4. Receive clearance to pick-up add/drop case packets.
    5. Find out results of cross-registration lottery by email.

  8. Be sure to list any cross-registered courses on your Study Card or home school Registration Form.

  9. If you have any questions, contact the Registrar's Office at your home school.

Once a student has been officially added to the course, the host school's Registrar's Office will forward the approved Cross- Registration petiton form to the student's home school's Registrar's Office.

  Important Notes:
  • It is the responsibility of each student interested in taking cross registration courses to contact his or her Program department or advisor to learn about specific cross registration restrictions.

  • It is up to the student to take responsibility for the submission of the cross registration petition by the appropriate deadline. A student must not mail petitions or leave them with a faculty member or administrative staff for signature and forwarding.

  • Students should familiarize themselves with the policies and procedures outlined by the school into which they will be cross registering. Students should make note of the deadlines for cross registration.

  • Students should be sure to check the credit equivalency charts to determine how the HOST school's credit will translate in their home school's credit system.

  • Students cross registering into full year courses must file both fall and spring term cross registration petitions.
