Harvard University Course Catalog Help

Welcome to the Harvard University Online Course Catalog (fourth release on September 01, 2006). This web site provides a comprehensive, searchable course catalog containing current course data from all Harvard schools, including information about course offerings and their descriptions, faculty information, and general information about the courses at each school. This site supports the searching of courses by a variety of means. Search results are presented in a standard format.

While every effort has been made to ensure that this catalog is accurate and up to date, it may include typographical or other errors. The information on this Course Catalog web site is subject to change. Updates are made to this site as new information is made available. The University reserves the right to withdraw or modify courses of instruction at any time.

More detailed course information including faculty biographies and course syllabi can be found on the individual school's catalog website. Printed course catalogs are distributed through each school's Registrars' Office.

Search Parameters

The following search parameters can be used to search the catalog database. Please note that the default for all search parameters is "all" with the exception of the default for "Term" being "Any semester".

Search by School: This will allow you to search courses offered at a particular graduate school. In addition, the system supports multiple selects. For example, you can select FAS or GSE or HDS and the search results will be for all three graduate schools. Please note that if you are searching courses at only one particular school, it may be more convenient to go directly to that particular school's online catalog. More detailed information, including faculty biographies, course syllabi, and other information can be found at the individual school's catalog website.
Search by faculty member: This will allow you to search courses offered by a particular faculty member. You can enter last name, first name or any portion of either name. To assist with focusing the search, you can also make use of operators such as "contains" or "begins with".
Search by schedule: This will allow you to search courses that are being offered in a particular term. You can also search courses by the day of the week and the approximate time of the offering. Search by time uses a "near or within one hour" search. For example, if a user selects 8:00 am the search will include any courses offered between 7:00a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
Search by department: This will allow you to search for courses being offered by a particular department or area within a Harvard school. A pull down list of all Harvard departments/areas is provided.
Full text search: Enter one or more words to narrow your search. The search is performed on course title and course description only. The search will look for exact matches and attempt to find similar text. To more focussed searches, you can also make use of operators such as "contains" or "excludes" or "and" or "or".

Additional Notes:

More detailed information, including faculty biographies, course syllabi, and other information can be found at the individual school's catalog website.

Jointly Listed Courses - courses that are offered jointly by two or more Harvard schools are noted. Graduate students are required to register for a jointly offered course at their home school.

Credit Conversions - Credits awarded differ across the schools. Students should check the credit equivalent chart to determine how the host school's credit will translate into their home school's credit system.

Academic Calendar - Please note that schedules differ across schools. The differences affect semester dates, daily class times, drop/add periods and deadlines, and exam periods. Each school at Harvard maintains its own academic calendar. Please refer to the individual school's academic calendar for more detailed information.

Course Numbers - each graduate school has its own course numbering scheme. Some numbers include the program area, the course level, or examination group. An explanation of a school's course numbering system can be found on the individual school's catalog web site.

Course meeting times are tentative. Changes will be posted when available.

Limited enrollment - courses with limited enrollment are noted.

Prerequisites - some prerequisites may be included in the course descriptions.
