Frequently Asked Questions

1.0 Can I use this site to register for classes?
No. This site is intended for course information only. Registration is still done at each school's Registrar's office.

1.1 How often is the course information updated?
The University reserves the right to withdraw or modify courses of instruction at any time. While every effort has been made to ensure that this catalog is accurate and up to date, it may include typographical or other errors. Changes are periodically made to the site. The information on this Course Catalog web site is subject to change. Updates are made to this site as new information is made available.

1.2 What information is available on this site?
The University wide on-line course catalog contains information about course descriptions, faculty information, and general information about classes at each school. The online site also provides for full text searching across University course offerings.

1.3 How do I find more detailed information about a specific course, for example, a faculty member's biographical information.?
More detailed information, including faculty biographies, course syllabi, and other information can be found at the individual school's catalog website.

1.4 What if I am interested in courses at only one particular graduate school?
If you are interested in searching the catalog of one particular school, you may want to visit the online course catalog site at that particular school.

1.5 How can I search the catalog?
The University catalog may be searched by various parameters, including school, term, faculty member's name, department/area, course type, or date/time. In addition, the catalog provides for full text searching across the University's course offerings.

1.6 How do I find courses that are jointly offered at another graduate school?
Courses that are offered jointly between two or more Harvard schools are noted in the course detail. Please note that a Harvard student must register for a jointly offered course at their home school if the course is offered at their home school.

1.7 Why is the course numbering scheme different between schools?
Each individual graduate school has its own course numbering system. Explanation of a school's course numbering system can be found on the school's catalog web site.

1.8 How do I find the required prerequisites for a course?
The prerequisites for a course are noted on the course detail pages. At times, prerequisites are described within the course description.

1.9 How do I find information about auditing a course?
Some courses are available to audit, usually with permission of the instructor. Courses that are available for audit are noted on the course detail page. There is often a limit to the number of credits per semester a student can take for audited coursework. Please note that the Extension School (and Summer School) courses which offer a "noncredit" registration option require a noncredit tuition fee.

1.10 How do I calculate the number of credits I will be granted?
Students should check the credit equivalent chart to determine how the host school's credit will translate into the home school's credit system. If there are any questions, students are advised to check with their home Registrar's Office about how a particular host school course counts toward credit at their home school.

1.11 How do I know how a course will be graded?
Grading and other regulations vary from school to school. It is the student's responsibility to find out about the grading policy at the host school. Many schools do not allow graduate or cross-registered students to take courses pass/fail, and negotiating pass/fail grading separately with faculty is likely not to be acceptable to the respective Registrar's Office.

1.12 How do I know when the final exam will be given for a particular course?
Students are urged to check the examination schedules of courses.
